	Candidates should have a PhD degree in the relevant discipline. For appointment at the rank of Chair Professor, candidates should have a strong international reputation in research with an outstanding track record of high impact research publications, substantial teaching experience, and capacity to provide academic leadership. For appointment as Professor, candidates should have substantial research and teaching experience with significant scholarly publications in leading journals and academic achievements. For appointment as Associate Professor, candidates should have at least five years of relevant experience and a sound track record in research and scholarly activities. For appointment as Assistant Professor, candidates should have relevant teaching experience and a good research record, and must demonstrate good potential in publishing high quality papers. For appointments at all ranks, candidates are expected to demonstrate good track records in successful grant applications. Previous administrative leadership experience at the Department level or above will be a distinct advantage.
	Appointment at junior levels will normally be made on an initial contract of three years, which, subject to review and mutual agreement, may normally lead to longer-term appointment with possibility of consideration for substantiation. For appointment at the rank of Professor and Chair Professor, appointment with substantiation will normally be considered.

The role

The School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is looking to recruit a full time postdoctoral researcher for a 3 year EPSRC-funded project. The project is led by Lancaster University who are looking at developing new Terahertz-based methods for probing the states of water in ion-exchange membranes; the Lancaster team will also conduct solid-state NMR experiments. The University of Surrey team's role is to synthesise and characterise a wide range of radiation-grafted ion-exchange membranes with a diversity of water contents and states that will then be supplied to Lancaster for testing.

The successful candidate will be joining a small and friendly research team led by Prof John Varcoe and will be supported by a team of specialist technicians. This is an on-site laboratory-based role and the bulk of the work will be conducted in the school's synthesis and characterisation laboratories, including a brand new energy research lab. The primary activities include: membrane synthesis; measuring ion-exchange capacities using auto-titration techniques; Raman microscopic mapping; and measuring physical properties such as ionic conductivities and water uptakes. The candidate will be expected to liaise with external partners including Lancaster University, commercial project partners (membrane suppliers), and other academic researchers who can conduct advanced characterisations such as X-ray, electron, and neutron scattering and imaging experiments.

Due to the timing of activities and the need to quickly supply materials to Lancaster University, the candidate must be able to start laboratory work at the start of January 2025.

About you

The candidate must hold (or be close to completion of) a PhD or EngD involving Polymer Chemistry. It is essential that the candidate has several years of experience of both polymer synthesis and characterisation and ideally will have direct experience of the radiation-grafting process and high-resolution Raman microscopy. Applicants are expected to be self-reliant and have a track record of: safe laboratory working and hazardous substances risk assessments; publications; problem solving and statistical skills; proactive engagement with a range of stakeholders (beyond academia); and innovation processes such as patenting (we anticipate foreground IP that will need protecting). The candidate must be willing to help supervise undergraduate final year project students on related projects, as well as demonstrating on an undergraduate practical involving the group's auto-titrators in Oct/Nov of each year (1 day per week for 3 weeks).

The School of Advanced Technology has five departments (intelligent Science, Computing, Mechatronics and Robotics, Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Communications and networking). RESPONSIBILITIES

Applicants will have extensive teaching experience, have published high quality papers in their area of expertise, have been successful in obtaining research grants, and have substantial experience in the supervision of research students. The successful candidate, in addition to teaching typically two modules/courses per year (i.e. one per semester), will provide leadership in curriculum development and enhancing our research profile at the international level. They are expected to assume administrative responsibilities based on their experience.

The role

The GCARE’s research projects are funded by the UKRI (e.g., EPSRC, NERC, ESRC, Innovate UK), numerous national and international funding bodies (e.g., EU H2020, British Council, UKIERI) and the industry. 

We are looking for a researcher with a PhD degree (or who will receive a PhD degree by December 2024) in the fields of civil, mechanical, chemical, environmental, data science, computer or transportation engineering, physics, chemistry or mathematical sciences or related disciplines.

The appointee will contribute to the GP4Streets project (DIY Greening Prescription for Climate Adaptation in Urban Streets) and support ongoing projects such as the UKRI RECLAIM Network Plus, EU Horizon Europe HealthySailing, various air quality consultancy projects, and NERC GreenCities. As part of the Guildford Living Lab, they will promote GCARE’s research locally, nationally, and internationally and assist with developing new grant applications. Based at the University of Surrey’s GCARE, the appointee will work closely with GCARE team members and project collaborators and may undertake short visits to partner institutions for collaborative research activities.

The postholder must have strong skills in big data analysis and air pollution modelling. Responsibilities include monitoring and modelling the effectiveness of green infrastructure in mitigating air pollution and urban overheating, with advanced statistical data analysis skills (e.g., R, Python, MATLAB). The role calls for a self-driven, independent individual, who can log, clean, share, assess, interpret, and write data efficiently to publish in top-tier journals. A proven track record of timely report writing is essential.
