Description

New York University Abu Dhabi seeks to recruit a Research Scientist to work within the newly established Abu Dhabi Precision Medicine Virtual Research Institute (ADPMVRI) supervised by Prof Bas Rokers. The Institute aims to develop a comprehensive research infrastructure - whereby diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment are tailored to each patient. The Institute will provide a set of platforms specific to the most common non-communicable diseases in Abu Dhabi, centered on biomarkers quantifying disease state, stratifying disease subtypes, and monitoring disease progression. In the context of brain health research, the Institute aims to identify markers predictive of perceptual and cognitive impairment in health conditions prevalent in the region, including diabetes, multiple sclerosis, obesity and normal vs. traumatic brain aging.

The appointed applicant is expected to develop and deploy solutions to handle the management and analysis of large amounts of neuroimaging, genomics, and health-related data. The ideal candidate must have a background in database management, neuroimaging and/or genomics data analytics, and machine learning and artificial intelligence applications. The candidate is expected to have programming experience with MATLAB, python, shell scripting, and UNIX/LINUX environments. Familiarity working within a high-performance computing environment is ideal.

To be considered, applicants must have received a PhD in Computer Science, Psychology, Neuroscience, mathematics, physics, Biology, Biomedical Engineering or a relevant STEM field. About You

To be successful in this role you will exhibit:


	Evidence of contributing to teaching and the scholarship of teaching at the discipline level, including involvement in curriculum development and teaching methodology
	Experience applying innovative approaches to pedagogy and/or curriculum design
	Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff and students
	Demonstrated experience in communicating with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, key stakeholders, and their representatives to achieve positive outcomes
	Familiarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health issues and an understanding of the social determinants of health as they impact Indigenous Australians
	Identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and is recognised as such by an appropriate Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander body, preferably with experience of Katherine Big Rivers Region Indigenous cultures.


Level B (Lecturer)

About You

To be successful in this role you will exhibit:


	Completion of a PhD OR community cultural recognition plus completion or near completion of a postgraduate degree or substantive experience in some branch of Indigenous studies/education
	Successful and independent innovation in learning and teaching delivery or design, including use of e-learning technologies, in the areas of Indigenous health issues, cultural safety, primary health care and population health.
	Demonstrated contribution to academic quality assurance processes, such as topic or course reviews
	Experience or capability to engage with students (and deliver teaching modules) via online learning platforms, related to Central Australian Indigenous knowledges and cultural practices
	Established relationships with Indigenous communities, groups and organisations within Central Australia, including the ability to lead community consultation
	Experience with engagement within a relevant external professional domain and within a wider community context at local or national level which could include working parties, committees, professional associations and conferenced workshops.

The role

This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a collaborative translational research project exploring the association of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection and the development of childhood asthma. The successful candidate will use complex respiratory epithelial cell models grown and differentiated at air-liquid interface to explore virus-host interactions and subsequent innate immune responses and signalling pathways.

We are therefore looking for a highly motivated individual with or about to obtain a PhD in a biological science related subject, and proven ability in cell biology and virus research. A background in culturing primary cells and/or organoid systems, virology, innate immunology and transcriptomics would also be highly beneficial.

Our well-equipped laboratory is located in the School of Biosciences at the beautiful campus of the University of Surrey, close to London. The dynamic and growing Section of Virology is comprised of five research groups focused on the molecular and cellular basis of disease caused by a range of important human and animal pathogens including herpesviruses, poxviruses, SARS-CoV2, RSV and arboviruses.

Description

The Division of Science at New York University Abu Dhabi, UAE is inviting applications for a Post-Doctoral Associate position in the areas of Protein Biochemistry and Enzymology. The candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. Wael Rabeh (https://www.rabehlab.com/) on the study of enzymes’ structures and functions in the area of cancer metabolism and viral infectious diseases. Applicants must have a strong background in protein biochemistry including experience in protein expression and purification. The lab is well equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for spectroscopy, thermodynamic and kinetic characterization of proteins’ thermal and chemical unfolding, and mass-spectroscopy for studying protein dynamics.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in biochemistry or a related field of study. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for an interview. Experience in mass spectroscopy or enzymology is desirable. Priority given to candidates with a background in the following areas of expertise:

Protein expression and purification (essential): The candidate must have prior hands-on experience in protein expression in E. coli or other cell lines and purification using affinity and size exclusion chromatography. Experience using FPLC in protein purification is a plus.

Experience in any of the following areas is a plus:


	Enzymology: mechanistic characterization of enzymes using initial velocity and enzyme inhibition kinetics.
	Hydrogen/deuterium exchange (HDX) mass spectrometry (MS) application in the study of enzyme dynamics and protein structural characterization.
	Spectroscopy including UV-Vis, fluorescence and circular dichroism spectroscopy.
	Calorimetry including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC).


The appointment is for a one-year, renewable term, starting on August 1st, 2024. The employment terms are competitive and include a tax-free salary plus housing and educational subsidies and health and dental insurance for the Postdoctoral Associate and their dependents.
