Asia University Rankings 2023

The Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2023 use the same 13 performance indicators as the THE World University Rankings, but they are recalibrated to reflect the attributes of Asia’s institutions.

The universities are judged across all their core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook – to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons available.

Tsinghua University and Peking University in China take the first and second positions for the fourth year in a row. A total of four mainland Chinese universities feature in the top 10, compared with three last year.

With three universities, Hong Kong follows with the next highest representation in the top 10. Its leading universities also rise in rank: Chinese University of Hong Kong moves up by one place to sixth, while The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology climbs two places to seventh. The University of Hong Kong remains in fourth.

Meanwhile, the highest-ranking universities in Japan and South Korea slide in the table.

The 2023 ranking includes 669 universities from 31 territories.

Japan again remains the most-represented nation this year, with 117 institutions.

A total of 79 universities have joined the ranking since last year. This increase is led by eight universities in Pakistan, followed by seven each from Iran and Turkey.
