29 November 2022

Times Higher Education (THE) has today released the results of the Arab University Rankings 2022 with Saudi Arabia continuing its trajectory as a rising star of excellence in higher education. King Abdulaziz University tops the Rankings for the second consecutive year and a number of Saudi Arabian institutions make significant leaps forwards: King Faisal University rises to joint 15th place up from 35th and Jouf University climbs to joint 19th place, up from group band 101+.

Elsewhere in the region, United Arab Emirates makes impressive strides forwards. UAE now boasts three universities in the top 10, up from two last year, as University of Sharjah rises to 9th place, up from joint 19th. Whereas Algeria suffers some dips in the Rankings with all of its universities ranked in last year’s Arab University Rankings experiencing falls. However, Algeria does add seven new universities to the table this year.

Libya makes its Rankings debut with University of Benghazi in group band 141+, and Egypt remains the most-represented country in the table, raising its total number of universities ranked to 34, up from 31.

The Times Higher Education Arab University Rankings 2022 is only the second iteration of this Rankings, which reveals the strength of higher education across the Arab region. The 2022 Rankings cover 169 universities across 15 countries, up from 125 universities in 14 countries last year.

The methodology is based on the same framework as our flagship rankings, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, but some adjustments have been made and some new metrics have been included to reflect the features and missions of universities in the Middle East and North Africa.

Phil Baty, Chief Knowledge Officer, Times Higher Education, commented:

“We saw in the recent Times Higher Education World University Rankings that there is a real Arab world renaissance when it comes to the region’s teaching, research and innovation in higher education, with universities across the region surging up the global rankings. But this deeper, more focused and in-depth analysis really shows the diverse and rich strength across the MENA region, with many countries meeting rigorous quality benchmarks and ready to play their part in the great strengthening of the Arab world as a global leader.”
