Tsinghua University has become the first institution in mainland China to feature in the top 10 of Times Higher Education’s life sciences ranking.
The Beijing university makes its debut in the subject ranking at 10th place thanks to a strong performance in research environment and citation impact – outshining the University of California, Berkeley, UCL and ETH Zurich in this discipline.
Meanwhile, Peking University is 19th in the table, up from joint 23rd, having improved its scores for teaching environment, research environment, citation impact and international outlook.
This year, THE made a small adjustment to the eligibility criterion for academic staff in the subject tables, which explains why Tsinghua and some other universities are new entrants.
It is the second time that a university in mainland China has featured in the top 10 of a global THE ranking. Peking University was ranked seventh in last year’s engineering and technology table.
The life sciences subject ranking is topped by Harvard University for the third year in a row.

THE’s global rankings for physical sciences, psychology and clinical, pre-clinical and health subjects have also been updated for 2019.
The new physical sciences table is led by Princeton University for the second consecutive year, while the Massachusetts Institute of Technology climbs two spots to second place, largely because of improvements to its teaching environment and industry links.
Stanford, UCL and Princeton once again take the top three spots in the psychology ranking, which is now in its second year. The University of Chicago and the University of Pennsylvania are new entries at fourth and fifth, following the change in the eligibility criterion for academic staff.
Meanwhile, the University of Oxford leads the clinical, pre-clinical and health table for the eighth consecutive year.
