Prejudice, professors and pride

June 12, 1998

In response to some misunderstanding of the tabulation derived by The THES and contained in Lola Young's article, here is a supplementary note.

As originally stated, information concerning professorial appointments is based on grade within an institution, as returned to the Higher Education Statistics Agency. Because of the varied salary structures used in the sector, it is not always the case that academic staff who are titled and regarded as "professors" in an institution are necessarily salaried on a professorial pay scale.

In this regard, it is quite possible that some professorial appointments have not been highlighted.
