Arnold Wolfendale, president of the Institute of Physics, is to chair an Office of Science and Technology committee on the public understanding of science. Iain Murray of the University of Dundee and Geoffrey Thomas, director of the department of continuing education at Oxford University will also be members. The committee's first task is to consult institutions about how they are helping scientists and engineers to contribute to public understanding.
