Everyone's a winner

March 10, 2000

I would like to float an idea for widening higher education participation that goes as follows. Middle-class parents buy an inner-city terraced house in City X while their child is in the sixth form. The child applies to City X University using the inner-city address and post-code. City X University offers a place to the middle-class child, thus gaining the Higher Education Funding Council for England funding bounty and a low-risk student.

The child then lives in the house while studying, and on graduation it is sold at a reasonable profit to parents of would-be applicants.

Everybody wins. Good performance indicators all round.
