Campus competition

September 29, 2000

It is a great pity that another well-known campus-life writer is not mentioned in "Spreading the word on campus" (Features, THES, September 22). That writer is Kingsley Amis, whose Lucky Jim and other books still provide entertaining insights into academic life of the later 1900s - and even of our own times.

Perhaps a Wolverhampton "don" might have hoped for a mention of Howard Jacobson's Coming from Behind, a prescient novel of significant local interest, albeit of less enduring literary merit than those of Martin Amis, Malcolm Bradbury and David Lodge.

Long may the genre continue.
