The debate regarding possible undemocratic election procedures at the Association of University Teachers ("AUT rivals reveal priorities", THES , January 11) prompts questions such as why does the union have no official grievance procedure against its permanent staff? I have written to the Trades Union Congress about this but it seems unconcerned. Perhaps colleagues should keep this in mind when deciding which union to join.
