About the role

We are seeking an exceptional candidate for the position of Senior Lecturer in Advanced Manufacturing. The successful applicant will be expected to conduct world-leading and impactful research, and teach across a broad range of areas including advanced manufacturing, Industry 4.0, sustainable manufacturing, and related topics in mechanical and aerospace engineering, computer-aided engineering, and advanced engineering materials. Proven research experience in these areas and a strong track record of successful grant applications are essential. The ideal candidate will be an outstanding researcher and educator with a history of impactful research, evidenced by publications in top journals and peer-reviewed conferences, and demonstrated excellence in teaching and learning in higher education. Responsibilities include collaborating with colleagues within the School and across the University, designing curriculum, teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and supervising students. The successful candidate will also be expected to foster links with external partners, including industry, government, and community, as the School diversifies its income sources. Additionally, the incumbent will develop and deliver innovative interdisciplinary academic programs, lead student projects for national and international competitions, and supervise projects addressing grand challenges. The ability to form strategic interdisciplinary teams and secure research grants in collaboration with internal and external partners is also required.

About You

The successful candidate will hold a PhD or equivalent in Advanced Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering, or a closely related field. You will have significant experience and achievements in areas such as advanced manufacturing, sustainable manufacturing, mechanical engineering, materials engineering, advanced material processing technologies, or computer-aided engineering,  an outstanding track record and international reputation for excellence in research and development, evidenced by peer-reviewed publications in high-profile journals, patents, Open Source developments, and strong national and international research collaborations. You will demonstrate leadership in research, fostering a strong research culture, and developing research initiatives, with experience supervising research students at Honours or higher degree levels, have a proven capacity to secure substantial research funding from various sources, including competitive government grants and industry partnerships. Additionally, you will exhibit proven leadership in curriculum development and program delivery in Advanced Manufacturing and Mechanical/Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Experience in successful interaction with industry or other external partners in research projects is essential, with industry experience in a related field being highly regarded.

The applicant will join the new Wellcome-funded Imaging Machine learning And Genetics in Neurodevelopment (IMAGINE) lab, in the Research Department of Biomedical Computing. The post will benefit from the extensive and broad expertise in AI and biomedical computing at the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences. The work will be done in close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team at KCL, UCL and clinicians at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

About the role

We are seeking an ambitious and motivated computational research scientist to join our new Wellcome-funded Imaging Machine learning And Genetics in Neurodevelopment (IMAGINE) lab.

The project aims to


	organise and manage large multicentre datasets of neuroimaging data
	develop machine learning / AI tools to identify abnormalities in epilepsy and other neurodevelopmental disorders
	create translational tools for evaluation on clinical cohorts.


The post-holder will also be expected to work collaboratively on a range of projects within the IMAGINE lab, which includes engineers, data scientists and clinicians.

This is a full time post (35 hours per week) and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 01/04/2028.

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria


	PhD qualified in relevant subject area (or pending results)*
	Experience working with large imaging datasets
	Excellent computer programming abilities evidenced by available code
	Presenting scientific research in the form of papers, posters or oral presentations

About Us

The Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences is ambitiously pushing the boundaries of progressive thinking to solve some of the big issues of our time, on both a national and global scale. The Faculty forms part of MQ Health, an integrated academic health sciences enterprise which incorporates Macquarie University Hospital and primary and speciality clinics. We have active research programs and our Faculty hosts the Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI), an internationally acclaimed powerhouse researching health systems, e-health and patient safety. The Institute draws from the expertise of over 320 staff, students and visiting personnel working on over 120 different projects at any given time, publishing more than one peer-reviewed publication on average per day.

The Centre for Healthcare Resilience and Implementation Science (CHRIS), within AIHI, has a multi-stream program of research which focuses on delivering health system improvement by working with patients, healthcare providers and policy makers. We are methodologically sophisticated, multidisciplinary and draw on assembled and collaborative expertise in areas including health systems, policy, medicine, nursing, psychology, anthropology, sociology and complexity science. Our research underpins new models of care, fashions improved services for patients, builds better policy, provides an evidence base to guide what people do, and transforms the systems through which care is delivered.

About the team

The National Paediatric Research Translation Initiative (N-PARTI) is an Australia-wide group of researchers, clinicians, and consumers that aims to improve the health of Australian children. It is a $5M, five-year project led by Professor Jeffrey Braithwaite at the AIHI, and involves collaborators from Perth Children's Hospital, Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service, Sydney Children's Hospital, and the University of New South Wales. Other collaborators, including Primary Healthcare Networks, will join during the implementation of the project.

N-PARTI aims to use implementation science in three priority areas, as exemplars, to improve primary care for child health: Asthma, Type 1 Diabetes, and Antibiotic overuse. N-PARTI will conduct a series of implementation research projects to increase the amount of care provided by general practitioners that is in line with best practice guidelines for these priority areas.

Central to N-PARTI is the effective implementation of interventions to increase uptake of evidence-based care guidelines that will significantly improve children's healthcare across the nation.

About the role

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher (Level A) or Research Fellow (Level B) with excellent mixed-methods research skills to work as the Mixed-Methods Researcher within the N-PARTI team, across all three priority areas. An understanding of the healthcare consumer and clinician context is key to effective implementation, so in the first two years of the position the Mixed-Methods Researcher will lead a range of studies to understand this context to help shape interventions, and to learn from the implementation process in pilot and demonstration programs. Subsequent research will be undertaken to understand the barriers and facilitators to intervention adoption, with fidelity, at scale.

The Mixed-Methods Researcher will work with expert advisory groups in each priority area, including consumer representatives, and when studying and implementing interventions, will work closely with participating Primary Healthcare Networks and General Practices. The Mixed-Methods Researcher will work with the project's Implementation Scientist to develop and integrate an understanding of the implementation context. They will also work with the project's Health Economist to ensure coverage of all relevant costs and benefits associated with program implementation. Appointment as Postdoctoral Researcher or Research Fellow will depend upon qualifications and experience.

About the position

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree. 

The PhD candidate will work on challenging research problems related to automated planning and scheduling (AI planning) for autonomous ship operations. Although autonomous ships will rely heavily on their motion control systems for accomplishing tasks such as path tracking, docking and collision avoidance, for an operation to be fully autonomous the ship must be able to tackle a wide range of additional situations that are outside the scope of low-level guidance and control, such as: When to switch from one stage of the mission to the next (from undocking to transit phase, for instance); What should happen in case of an unexpected situation, such as an unforeseen combination of faults, or sudden lack of vital information at any point during the mission. Such decisions must be made by a high-level agent that is aware of the exact mission objectives, has available the best possible update regarding the current status of the ship and the mission, and has an overview of available resources (including, time, energy, and even the possibility to pass information to a human supervisor onshore).

The mission planning system must generate action sequences (plans) that are feasible, consider all relevant constraints, and can be updated online, since the uncertainty in the marine environment will often render initial planning irrelevant at some point during the mission. From the aforementioned, it becomes obvious that mission planning will be strongly coupled with the ship’s motion control systems and sensors.

This aspect of autonomy has in the past been considered in the context of Space missions. AI planning has been instrumental in those cases, and the successful candidate will be tasked to develop similar methodologies customized to autonomous ship missions. All proposed methodologies will be tested and verified via full-scale experiments.  

The position is part of SFI AutoShip, the new 8-year research-based innovation Center in autonomous ships. The Centre focuses on autonomy, digital infrastructure, maritime transport, safety and risk analysis, maritime law, human-machine interaction, and cyber security, with partners from research, public sector and maritime industry. The position reports to Associate Professor Anastasios Lekkas as the main scientific supervisor of the research. 

Duties of the position

The main objective of the research is to develop mission planning systems for autonomous ships based on AI planning. The purpose of the mission planning system is to generate action sequences (plans) in a reactive manner, which will then be implemented by the motion control systems of the ship (potentially other modules too, such as communication systems) in order for the ship to accomplish its mission. As part of the research activities, you will collaborate actively with some of the partners in the SFI AutoShip Center. You will be encouraged to have a research stay with one of the collaborating universities outside Norway during the research period.

Selection criteria

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. 

The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in cybernetics, electrical engineering, mathematics, computer science, physics, electronic systems or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

Required qualifications


	Academic background as listed above. 
	Excellent English skills (written and oral).
	Programming skills, using Python, C++, Matlab, and/or other languages, and frameworks such as ROS. 
	You must meet the requirements for admission to the PhD programme in Engineering Cybernetics.


Preferred selection criteria


	Knowledge and skills in AI planning, and/or guidance and control for robotic systems. 
	Experience with autonomous systems. 


The employment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

Salary and conditions

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years (or 4 years with 25% teaching duties for suitable candidates).

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Engineering Cybernetics within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. 

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding.
