There are two fundamental questions every prospective international student needs to ask themselves: Where would I want to study? And what language do I want to study in?
If the answer to the latter question is “English”, then your quest to find the right location just got that much easier.
A new visualisation tool, compiled by StudyPortals, has mapped the location of every English taught degree at the top 1,000 universities in the world.
- All the best universities in the Netherlands
More than 70,000 programmes are plotted on the map, including bachelor’s and master’s degrees in more than 700 cities worldwide, covering 200 subjects.
Edwin van Rest, the chief executive of StudyPortals, said: “Choosing a new study programme without knowing your options is similar to buying a house but only looking at your block to make the decision. We want to make sure students make good choices and follow their dreams to study abroad.”
For obvious reasons, the programmes are highly clustered in the US, the UK, and to a lesser extent, Southern Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Nonetheless, there are some interesting insights to glean from the tool, and surprises that stand out on the map.
The east coast of the US has a much higher density of top universities than the rest of the country, but Kent State University in Ohio, ranked in the 501-600 band in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2015-16, is the institution with the most programmes: 541 in total.
It is clear from the map that even aside from the UK, mainland Europe has a significant number of degrees taught in English, many of them concentrated in the Netherlands and across Germany. Together, these two countries offer almost 2,000 English programmes.
Leiden University in the Netherlands, which is in the THE’s top 20 for arts and humanities, has the highest number of English taught degrees at any institution in Europe outside the UK.
On the other side of the world, English programmes can be found scattered across Asia, with a significant number in South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore.
China has the highest number of top-ranked Asian universities offering at least one programme in English, with 45 institutions providing 419 study options in total, followed by Taiwan, where 20 universities offer 216 different programmes.
To see only programmes at universities within a specific range of the World University Rankings, go to the StudyPortals site where you can select the range on the side of the visualisation to filter, revealing an updated distribution.
