Founded in 1936, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has been promoting excellence in education and research in social sciences in India, through its teaching, research and field action programmes.
Today, TISS is one of the most vibrant universities in contemporary India, with 4 campuses in Mumbai, Tuljapur, Guwahati and Hyderabad. Forbes India named TISS a 'Great Place to Study' in a 2018 feature on Indian Institutes. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) awarded a 5-star rating to TISS for the 3rd consecutive cycle, with a leading score of 3.89 out of 4.00 (2016).
A comprehensive range of Undergraduate, Postgraduate, M.Phil. and direct Ph.D. programmes, as well as Diploma and Certificate programmes, are offered at TISS. High quality scholars and practitioners from Social, Economic, Political, Physical, Habitat, Engineering, Health, and Environmental Sciences are brought together to create interdisciplinary teaching and research programmes combined with field action to address the most critical current issues of the nation.
Since inception, TISS has envisioned to be an institution of excellence in higher education that continually responds to changing social realities through the development and application of knowledge, towards creating a people-centred, ecologically sustainable and just society that promotes and protects dignity, equality, social justice and human rights for all.
With the belief that scholarship, education and developing human service professionals and practitioners are key to addressing societal issues, TISS has continually developed pioneering courses in applied, transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary social sciences, social work and management, with a strong focus on community and industry engagement.
The Institute facilitates autonomous research and dissemination of knowledge through high quality national and international publications, strategic extension and field action work, and training and capacity building of State and nonState institutions and personnel.
TISS reaches out to the wider community through its field action projects: M Ward, Tarasha, Sukoon, TANDA (Towards Advocacy, Networking and Developmental Action), Social Advancement Through Health Initiative (SATHI) and more. Many of these important field action initiatives have been successful in influencing policies on the national level.
