In brief

If scientific evidence contradicts the existence of David, Solomon and ancient Israel, it would certainly be difficult to sustain a belief in some very important historical premises of Judaism ("Greatest story ever told", THES, February 11). But the consequences for Christanity and Islam, both of which I believe trace their origin to David, would probably be at least equally significant.

I find it worrying, therefore, that Philip Davies, who challenges such deep-rooted assumptions affecting three world religions, chooses to focus on just one and, perhaps unintentionally, creates the impression that he is not all that objective, but as eager to prove ancient Israel's non-existence as his opponents are said to be to prove its existence.
