In my reaction to Bruce Charlton's views,

I said I was asked to lie for the teaching quality assessment exercise. What had upset me was being asked, by another institution, to provide a letter that would look unsolicited - when obviously it was not.

Unfortunately, the crucial sentence was edited out of my letter. So let me be clear.

I would happily praise the good work of these students, they deserve it - but no one should be soliciting "unsolicited" letters as proof of excellence.
