The CVCP should solve pay dispute

August 13, 1999

Academics in old universities this week began industrial action to disrupt admissions. Their case (page 14) is good. But unfortunately that does not mean anything will be done. Non-academic unions are settling for the 3.5 per cent on offer. Newer universities are not involved in the action. The 3.5 per cent offer tops inflation and other staff are rallying round to save students aggravation. For vice-chancellors to pass the buck to a government that is plainly not listening is a cop-out. Finding a solution to inadequate pay will be the main challenge facing the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals' new chairman, Professor Howard Newby. Welcome to the job, professor.
