In short...

I did not say that school science teaching "should be dumbed down" (THES, September 11). What I said was that the school science curriculum is outdated and based on the unjustified assumption that it is a prep- aration for further study in science. Our report argues for a new vision of school science enabling students to better understand the discipline.
