Knight in his armour

April 3, 1998

I fully support Peter Knight's stirring critique of censorship. The choice of what we look at, read or listen to must reside with the individual in society and not be dictated by outmoded laws. While it is thoughtful of the state to be concerned about my moral wellbeing, I am prepared to take my chances against the potential corrupting properties of information I access.

Recent controversies remind me of the heroic efforts of Bette Davis in the 1956 film Storm Center, who, as town librarian, valiantly refused to bow to right-wing hysteria and withdraw a text with communist overtones. Not a bad role-model in these dark days.
