Campus of excellence

Ranked among the top universities in France for the quality of its academic courses, research and knowledge transfer programmes, the University of Bordeaux is a multidisciplinary university with deep regional roots that reach out to the European and international level. Recognised for its capacity for innovation and awarded the "Initiative of Excellence" label, the University of Bordeaux regularly contributes to major scientific advances with its academic and socioeconomic partners in France and abroad.

Within the ENLIGHT European alliance, the University of Bordeaux along with nine other universities from the four corners of Europe pursues an ambitious strategy for educational and research transformation. The strategy defines and addresses six main flagship challenges, which are key determinants of societal well-being and sustainability: health and well-being, climate action, digital innovation, equity, energy transition and circularity as well as culture and creativity.

Multidisciplinary study offer

The University of Bordeaux welcomes 54,000 students, of which almost 2,000 are PhD students, and 7,200 are international students. 150 Bachelor (incl. vocational) and 250 Master programmes are proposed within the four major scientific fields of:

International study possibilities

The university counts nearly 700 partner universities based in over 80 countries and has dedicated exchange programmes with more than 60 countries worldwide.

A wide range of international study programmes have been developed at Bachelor, Master and Doctorate level, enabling students to study in English (or other languages) and sometimes offering the possibility of studying abroad, and/or completing joint or double degrees. 

A leading international research university

Research is also multidisciplinary, organised according to 11 departments:

These departments group together almost 90 research laboratories that are under joint supervision with national research bodies (CNRS, Inserm, INRAE, etc.).

The University of Bordeaux also boasts 7 major research programmes, centred around specific scientific or social issues with strong international relevance:

A Graduate Research School coordinates the entire field of doctoral studies in collaboration with the eight doctoral schools that ensure support and guidance for PhD studentsGraduate Research Programmes have been launched within the domains of neuroscience, light sciences and technologies, digital public health, complex digital systems, advanced chemistry, cancer biology and cardiac electrophysiology. Founded on specific disciplines where Bordeaux has achieved international levels of excellence in terms of education and research, these graduate programmes propose a high-level training at Master and Doctorate level.

Our university is a hub of international, cutting-edge research as demonstrated by just some facts and figures:

  • 200 joint doctoral agreements
  • 22 international joint research laboratories
  • 130 EU collaborative projects (Horizon 2020, FP7 and Interreg projects)
  • 30 projects awarded a Europen Research Council (ERC) grant (Bordeaux campus site)
  • A Welcome Centre for International Researchers (including doctoral students)

A dynamic campus located in a vibrant city

The University of Bordeaux has one of the largest campuses (187 hectares) in Europe. It is composed of several sites that are located near to the city and that offer a broad range of services and amenities. 135 student associations exist and participate in the organisation of a wide range of cultural activities throughout the academic year. A campus of excellence for sports as well, the university offers more than 50 sporting activities for beginners or experienced athletes, ranging from rugby to surfing to dancing and more!

In 2020, Campus France awarded the University of Bordeaux with the highest rating (3 stars) for the “Choose France" label, in recognition of its high-quality welcome services for international students. Committed to providing its students and staff with a good quality of life through extensive social, environmental and health policies, the university provides personalised support to students with disabilities or long illnesses, high-level sports students, confirmed artists, elected students and other profiles (employees...).

In addition, the University of Bordeaux benefits from all the assets of the city of Bordeaux and its surroundings. The city is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List and the “Wine Capital” of the world, Bordeaux is located at the very heart of Southern Europe, only a few hours from major EU cities and just one hour from the Atlantic Ocean. In recent years, the city and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region have grown rapidly in terms of population and this growth has spurred strong economic development.
