Postdoctoral Fellowship in Spatial Multiomics

Our research

A postdoctoral position around tumor microenvironment and spatial omics analysis is now open in Anniina Färkkilä’s lab (www.farkkilab.org), located at Biomedicum, University of Helsinki, Finland. The lab is part of the Research Program for Systems Oncology, Faculty of Medicine, and FIMM, Helsinki Institute for Life Sciences.

The overall goal is to discover how the tumor cells evade the immune system in ovarian cancer, with prospects of leading to major scientific breakthroughs and successful translation of the findings into clinical trials. We have collected a unique dataset from more than 500 patients in the prospective Oncosys-OVA study. This dataset includes multi-omics, multi-site spatial profiling data, along with whole exome- and RNA-sequencing, highly multiplexed imaging, and curated clinical data. Our multidisciplinary team has also developed experimental and functional models to validate findings emerging from the data, generating a unique environment to drive translational scientific discoveries with high clinical relevance. We have demonstrated optimizing and clinically implementing a genetic biomarker for ovarian cancer patients, that is currently used for centralized national testing in Finland (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36581696/).

Our lab received a prestigious ERC grant in 2022 and has received steady funding from e.g. the Research Council of Finland, Sigrid Jusélius Foundation, and the Cancer Foundation Finland. We also actively collaborate with esteemed research institutes globally, including Harvard Medical School and Netherlands Cancer Institute.

Your mission

This position is perfect for someone aspiring to become a future group leader. We seek a candidate with expertise in imaging, spatial biology, transcriptomics, or proteomics. You will spearhead the development of innovative spatial biology and proteomics methods, contributing to high-quality translational research. A monthly salary and benefits according to the Helsinki University standards will be applied ranging from 3700 to 4000€ per month guaranteeing a good quality of life in Helsinki.

Program Overview

The NYU Abu Dhabi Summer Academy is an 18-month university preparation program designed to enhance the academic profiles of highly motivated Emirati high school students. The program features intensive instruction in Leadership and Public Speaking, Critical Thinking and Writing, Mathematical Reasoning for the Sciences, College Readiness and Success, and IELTS Preparation over the course of two summers and an intervening academic year. 

Following a competitive admissions process, up to 90 program participants are selected each year as recipients of the Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Scholarships for Outstanding High School Students, which enables them to attend the Summer Academy.

In this mixed-gender program, students are exposed to a rich cultural and rigorous academic program which enhances their ability to gain admission to and perform well at top-tier English-language universities. The program begins during the summer following the 10th year of high school and continues for the following 18 months, with two intensive summer sessions of study in Abu Dhabi at the NYUAD Campus. In addition, students participate in online study and academic refresher weekends during the following academic year.

University Preparation

Students gain the academic, cultural, and social skills necessary for success at top-tier universities. Summer Academy graduates have attended Yale, NYU New York, NYU Abu Dhabi, Princeton, United Arab Emirates University, The London School of Economics, George Washington University, King’s College London, The University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, and many others.

Academic Preparation

We introduce students to accelerated study of mathematics, critical thinking and writing, the humanities and to the value of a liberal arts education.

Job Summary

The Teaching Assistant for the Mathematical Reasoning for the Sciences (MTH) course will support course delivery for up to two sections of Summer Academy students - students in their first summer of the program and students in their second summer of the program (Summer I and Summer II). The Teaching Assistant will also support programmatic activities throughout the length of the appointment (including weekends) and participate in selection activities and graduation events as needed.

Length of Appointment


	Summer Session: Five weeks from approximately July 7 - August 8, 2025
	Approximately two meetings prior to the summer session’s start for orientation activities


Principal Responsibilities

The job’s activities in terms that enable someone who knows nothing about the job to understand what is done in each activity.


	Support the delivery of the MTH course for two sections - the Classes of 2025 (Summer II) and 2026 (Summer I) in Abu Dhabi
	Under the supervision of the MTH instructor(s), meet students individually or in small groups during study halls, meals, breaks, or in the evenings to assist with reviewing classroom instruction, reading, writing, and homework assignments
	Attend any pre-program meetings and/or training sessions
	Assist the MTH instructor(s) in class with group work and with judging presentations, as necessary
	Be available to individual students and groups in need of assistance, as well as to instructors undertaking cross-curricular or collaborative projects
	Provide students with ongoing and regular feedback (oral and written) during the course 
	Participate in faculty meetings by providing detailed feedback on student progress 
	Report any instances of student misconduct, academic performance concerns, or health issues to the Summer Academy administration
	Contribute to the overall collegial atmosphere of the Summer Academy
	Attend and provide assistance as needed with co-curricular events and activities throughout the summer session, which will entail leading small groups of students on excursions and trips, or supporting the operations of the program as needed

About the role

This role has a teaching and research focus. Working in a new course, the Senior Lecturer will collaboratively contribute to the design, development, implementation, evaluation, and ongoing improvement of an innovative curriculum and pedagogy for the Master of Speech Pathology. They will lead unit and course teaching teams to develop, implement and continuously improve the student learning experience and outcomes, taking on specific leadership roles, for example, Course Director. The position will work with the local community and lead growing, increasingly productive, high-quality research, scholarship and engagement activities.

As a Senior Lecturer, you will:


	Integrate industry, clinical, collaborative and/or research practice into unit/course design to improve student learning experiences.
	Integrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledges and perspectives across curriculum and teaching practice.
	Lead the development and/or adoption of new innovation in curriculum design
	Make a significant contribution to pedagogy research projects and demonstrate a disciplinary reputation in teaching scholarship and pedagogical research.
	Seek funding for research and creative activities, including applications for external competitive funding, external funding for commercialization and translation activities
	Recruit and supervise HDR students with timely completions and production and high-quality outcomes and provide effective mentoring to HDR students


To be successful, you’ll have: 


	Qualification as a speech pathologist at undergraduate or graduate level plus a PhD in a relevant area or advanced qualifications and extensive experience in academic speech pathology.

Remuneration

A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP1,250,200 (approximately USD154,350) for the position of Full Professor, MOP1,052,800 (approximately USD129,980) for the position of Associate Professor will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions. Required Education, Certifications, Licensing, or Training


	Bachelor’s degree in English or a related subject
	Availability to teach in Abu Dhabi during the dates listed above
	Ability to provide some online instruction during the dates listed above, if necessary


Preferred Education, Certifications, Licensing, or Training


	Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in English or related subject
	High-school or college-level experience teaching in English



Required Work and Related Experience


	Demonstrated experience in tutoring English or related subjects
	Demonstrated interest in cross-cultural education and enthusiasm for teaching
	Experience supervising high school students in a co-curricular setting (i.e. school or after school program)
	Availability to assist with the planning of the program prior to the start of classes



Preferred Work and Related Experience


	Work or internship experience teaching English as an additional language
	Familiarity with online and face-to-face instruction
